With Bonfire Night on November 5th, and many events happening all around this time of year, it’s important to prepare for the festivities while ensuring the safety and well-being of your pets, children, and others who may be affected, for example, veterans. We understand that fireworks in Wimbledon can be both exciting and distressing. Taking a few precautions can make a big difference. Here are some essential tips for keeping your loved ones safe during the celebrations.Create a Safe Space for Pets
Fireworks can be unsettling for pets, so it’s crucial to create a calm and secure environment for them. Ensure your pets have a quiet space indoors where they can retreat when fireworks start. This could be a cosy room or a designated safe area with their bed, toys, and water. Close windows and doors to minimise the noise, and consider using calming pet products such as pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps.
Classic FM plays calming music most years, a programme they’ve created in collaboration with the RSPCA. This, or some other soothing music, can help cover up some of the fireworks noise.
If your pet is particularly anxious, consult your vet about possible calming supplements or medications. Make sure your pet’s identification tags are up-to-date and that they are microchipped, in case they manage to escape in a panic.
Keep Children Informed and Supervised
For children, it’s important to talk about fireworks in advance and explain that while they can be exciting to watch, they can also be loud and sometimes dangerous. Teach children to stay a safe distance from fireworks and bonfires. Explain the importance of not running around or trying to handle fireworks themselves.
Supervise children closely during any fireworks displays, whether you’re hosting a gathering or attending an event. Ensure that they are always with an adult, and remind them to keep a safe distance from any fireworks or bonfires. Even sparklers can be risky if not used properly so it’s important to monitor young children and explain the risks to older children too.
Secure Your Home and Garden
Make sure your home and garden are secure to prevent pets from escaping and to keep children safe. Check that all gates and doors are securely closed, and consider keeping your pets indoors during the fireworks display. If you’re hosting a bonfire or fireworks event, make sure that the area is well-lit and that children and pets are kept away from the display area.
Provide Distractions and Comfort
Offering your pets distractions can help divert their attention from the noise of fireworks. Provide them with their favourite toys or treats to keep them occupied. For children, consider organising indoor activities or games that can help them stay entertained and less focused on the fireworks outside.
Prepare for Emergencies
Have a plan in place in case of an emergency. Keep a list of emergency contacts handy, including your vet’s number, and know the location of the nearest pet emergency clinic. For children, ensure they know how to contact you or another trusted adult if they become separated or need help.
We care about the well-being of your family and pets during the Bonfire Night celebrations (and during your house moves!). By taking these precautions, you can ensure a safer and more enjoyable evening for everyone.
